Can orthodontic devices for widening the jaw work in adults?

I had 4 of my adult teeth pulled when my orthodontists decided to not use jaw widening devices and instead pull my teeth to make room in my small jaw, but my teeth are still crowed after the loss of those teeth and 3 years of braces! I want to widen my jaw but is this possible now that I am 21 without surgery?
